Dr John C. Pittman

Dr John C. Pittman
Dr John C. Pittman, founder and medical director of the Carolina Center for Bio-Oxidative Medicine in Raleigh, N.C., became intrigued with the power of Aloe Vera when he was working in a hospital emergency room. One morning a patient came in with burns on her hands, the result of a cooking accident. The hospital at the time was conducting a study of Aloe Vera, so Dr. Pittman asked the burn victim if he could dress her right hand with the traditional treatment of the antibiotic cream Silvadene while dressing the left with a purified form of liquid Aloe Vera concentrate. She agreed. That evening the patient returned to the hospital and demanded that he put whatever he had out on her left hand on her right. She told Dr. Pittman that her right hand was still throbbing with pain, while her left hand had no pain whatsoever. To his surprise, while redressing the wounds he found the redness, swelling, and pain were greatly reduced on the aloe-treated hand but not on the one that he had treated with Silvadene.

Dr. Pittman helps his patients design individual and family wellness programs that combine the best of both allopathic and complementary medicines. "in 1994," says Pittman, "the state of North Carolina opened the door to the legal practice of holistic health care by a medical physician when it added a statute to its laws giving physicians the right to explore all types of treatment in order to best serve their patients. That made my center possible." Now Dr. Pittman prescribes Aloe Vera juice for patients who suffer from immuno-depressive conditions like the Epstein-Barr virus, chronic fatigue syndrome, AIDS, and systemic candidiasis.

Dr. Pittman found that most immuno-depressive conditions have one common symptom: a high incidence of digestive dysfunction and poor digestion. "Food allergies - especially to dairy - are a major source of digestive dysfunction," remarks Dr. Pittman.

According to Dr. John Pittman, "it is because of these versatile and comprehensive characteristics that concentrated Aloe Vera juice is strongly recommended in the treatment of immune deficiency disorders. Aloe Vera juice plays a prominent role in the multi dimensional treatment of these illnesses.

The healing powers of Aloe Vera juice has been known for centuries, but now we have the scientific foundation that allows appreciation of this amazing plant and its important role in restoring and maintaining our health."

Poor digestion happens when foods are not being broken down properly and are not being used to help the body regenerate itself. The intestines then become inflamed as the intestinal lining reacts by swelling. Increased intestinal permeability develops as partially digested food particles are released into the bloodstream. Alternative health practitioners call this "leaky gut syndrome". Once in circulation, the body reacts to these particles as though they were foreign and alerts the immune system to attack them by building up antibodies. After a lengthy fight the immune system enters into a chronic hyper immune state. "The immune system becomes so overworked," says Dr. Pittman "that it is similar to draining a battery."

This hyperimmune state can lead to rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and connective tissue disorders. "In addition to a worn-out immune system," comments Dr. Pittman, "food remnants provide fuel for the overgrowth of fermentative fungal organisms such as candida albicans and various types of #Parasites">parasites. Candida in turn can worsen food allergies, create hypoglycemia and digestive disturbances, and cause bloating, flatulence, skin rashes, and extreme fatigue, all of which can further damage the immune system. Drinking Aloe Vera juice helps to seal the intestinal wall much in the same way aloe gel seals a wound or soothes a burn when applied to the skin.

"Aloe effectively heals the lining of the intestines," says Dr. Pittman. "It fixes the damaged membranes, intestinal swelling decreases, and the cells of the intestinal wall are tightened, which basically corrects intestinal weakness. The continual flow of protein to the blood is also stopped." In addition to prescribing aloe to his patients with leaky guy syndrome, Dr. Pittman suggests a modified juice fast from three to 10 days. This puts the GI tract to a well needed rest.

"Unfortunately, most people do not realize that they even have leaky gut syndrome," says Dr. Pittman, "until one day they have organ system failure and just collapse." He suggests that patients take notice of their health and pay particular attention to any long-term or recurring infections that could indicate immune system failure. Dr. Pittman also recommends that his patients have a comprehensive stool study done (Great Smokies Lab); This enables him to know all of the aspects of the patients' digestion and whether they could be suffering from bacterial, yeast, or parasitic infections.

Dr. Robert Davis

Several years ago, Dr. Robert Davis of The University of Pennsylvania and a prominent Aloe expert, came to Dallas to share some astounding research. Dr. Davis found that Aloe Vera would increase wound healing by 121%. It did this by stimulating the fibro blast. Dr. Davis made this comment. "Aloe not only delivers nutrients to the body but it seems to have a zip code and knows where to deliver the nutrients." (Remember that phrase: "Seems to have a zip code.")

When people speak of an "active ingredient" in Aloe juice, they are usually referring to a group of long chain sugars formerly called Mucopolysaccharides and more recently referred to as Polysaccharides. While Polysaccharides undoubtedly have many amazing properties - they've been shown to be anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, immuno-stimulants, and more - they are just one portion of more than 200 Biologically Active Nutritional Components in Aloe. Davis developed a theory to explain the interaction between all these constituents. According to Davis, the Polysaccharide is the "Conductor" that modulates the activities of the "Orchestra", the Vitamins, Minerals, Enzymes, Amino Acids, Growth Factors and other Nutritional Components. Dr. Davis stated, "Aloe Vera contains the greatest number of active substances of any plant I've looked at."

Aloe Vera improves wound healing and inhibits inflammation. Davis, Robert H. (PhD), Di Donato, Joseph J. (BA, BS), Hartman, Glenn M. (BS), & Haas, Richard C. (BA). (1994, February). Dr. Terry Moule (England)

Dr. Moule had a friend who developed cancer. He treated it for ten years with a high quality aloe that Aloe Commodities sent to him. When the friend passed away from something other than cancer, an autopsy was performed and it was discovered that the cancer cells had been restrained by a film, or cap, that had stopped the cancer from spreading.

Dr. Li (Korea)

Dr. Li received the $10,000 grant from the International Aloe Science Council for his study, whereby he injected lab animals with live cancer cells, then contained the spread of the cancer with regular doses of quality Aloe Vera.

Dr. Lawrence Plaskett
(a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, Great Britain)

Dr Plaskett Dr. Plaskett selected 31 patients who had been diagnosed with terminal cancer (6 months or less to live).

He gave them high quality Aloe Vera Concentrate Juice. Dr. Plaskett also included coffee enemas and a very strict diet. Forty-four months later, all 31 patients were alive and two patients had a complete remission, seven had a partial remission, and 22 were stabilized.

Dr. Lawrence G. Plaskett, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry among many other academic distinctions, states "The action of substances in Aloe Vera does activate and intensify the immune response, and this constitutes one of the fundamental scientifically established actions of Aloe upon the body."

Dr. Byung Pal Yu (University of Texas Health Science Center)

Dr. Pal Yu took 240 lab animals and divided them into two groups of 120 animals each. All 240 animals were the same; they were in the same environment, and had exactly the same diet. Group A (120 animals) had Aloe Vera to drink, and Group B (120 animals) had only water to drink.

This study yielded three significant facts: 1. The animals drinking aloe lived 10% longer. 2. The animals drinking aloe had 39% less cancer. 3. The animals drinking aloe had 56% less heart attacks and strokes.

Dr. Pal Yu brought a slide showing a cross section of the liver from an animal from each group. The liver from the Group B animals had hard spots and channels and was 40% as effective as a new liver. The liver from the Group A animals.

Dr. Wendell Winters (Associate Professor of Microbiology - University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio)

Dr. Wendell Winters, associate professor of Microbiology at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, has researched the Aloe Vera plant for 16 years. Dr. Winters, who is also the head of the Phytobiology Research Department stated, " In fact, we think of Aloe as a pharmacy in a plant".

Ivan E. Danhof, Ph.D., M.D.

Ivan E. Danhof, Ph.D. Often quoted as the "Father of Aloe", Ivan E. Danhof, Ph.D., M.D. is the world's leading expert on Aloe Vera and natural herbal remedies with over 30 years of laboratory research and extensive practical experience. He discovered the rejuvenating ability of Aloe Vera, anti-aging. "He believes that one of the main reasons lies in the plant’s unique ability to increase production of human fibroblast cells between six and eight times faster than normal cell production. Fibroblast cells are found in the dermis of the skin and are responsible for the fabrication of collagen, the skin’s support protein which keeps skin firm, supple, and youthful looking. He found that Aloe Vera not only improved fibroblast cell structure but also accelerated the collagen production process. He also believes the clue may lie, once again, with the magic polysaccharides and their moisture binding properties." As a result of his unique training and background Dr. Danhof has become recognized as one of the world’s foremost experts on medically active herbal molecules, and in particular the functional components in Aloe Vera. Dr. Danhof is a highly sought speaker on the discovery of the unique molecules in Aloe Vera that earned it the global reputation of the potted physician.

Perhaps the most remarkable studies concern the effect of aloe fractions on the status of patients with HIV which causes AIDS. The polysaccharide fraction of aloe was shown to exhibit antiviral activity and enhance immune cell function. Danhof, Ivan E. (PhD, MD). Internal uses of Aloe Vera.

Dr. Glen Hyland (Oncologist)

Oncologist Glen Hyland from the Mayo Clinic reviewed the health histories of 100 cancer patients who used Aloe Vera therapy as a part of their cancer treatment. He marveled at the speed at which patients receiving glyconutrients from Aloe Vera experienced a reduction in the size of squamous cell carcinomas (lung) and oat cell carcinomas (usually originating in the bronchi or lungs).

And the patients' erythrocytes (red blood cells), leukocytes (white blood cells), and thrombocytes (platelets) did not diminish. A serious reduction in these blood elements is a potential threat in patients undergoing cancer chemotherapy.

Dr. Hyland commented that normal cells appeared protected and abnormal cells appeared more sensitive to treatment when Aloe Vera was made part of an integrated approach. Rafael Castillo, MD Aloe Vera for heart disease, cancer? Inquirer

Moore, Timothy E. (DDS/MS, PC)

Aloe Vera has been shown to enhance defense mechanisms, and it has a variety of components to help combat periodontal disease and other oral conditions. As a periodontist utilizing Aloe Vera in various consistencies for the last 14 years with over 6,000 documented patients who have been treated with applications, I've observed remarkable healing, reduced edema, and pain control. ...Other oral disorders such as Candidiasis, Desquamative Gingivitis, Vesiculobullous diseases, acute monocytic leukemia, hematological disorders and nutritional problems all respond to Aloe Vera use. Even diabetes mellitus, Sjorgen's Syndrome, menopausal patients and medications which can cause Xerostomia or dry mouth.

...Aloe Vera has an unlimited future in new applications, and I sense in dentistry we are just on the cutting edge of promising utilization for anti-inflammatory procedure, antiviral, and immunological benefits for our patients.

Hedendal, Bruce Eric (DC, PhD). (N.D.) says "In clinical studies of Aloe Vera’s internal and external uses during the past six months, I have personally witnessed mitigations or complete resolutions of the following:
Herpes simplex & zoster
Staph infections
Menstrual cramps & irregularity
Denture (gum) sores
Epstein-Barr virus
Chronic fatigue
Actinic keratoses
Ulcerative colitis
Parasites (especially protozoan infections)
Radiation dermatitis
Viral infections
Insect bites
Allergic reactions
(reversal of anaphalaxis)
Peptic & duodenal ulcers
Varicose veins

...I know you must be thinking that no one plant or product could affect - in some positive way - all of the above. If so, it would be a miracle. Webster defines a miracle as “an extraordinary event manifesting outstanding or unusual event, thing, or accomplishment; and a divinely natural occurrence that must be learned humanly.” By this definition, it is no wonder why thousands of Aloe Vera users worldwide have commonly referred to it as a “miracle plant.”

Is Aloe Vera really a miracle plant? Many facts and continued research are available, so you may decide for yourself. Organized medicine and pharmacology have not embraced Aloe, because it cannot be patented and its usage threatens literally hundreds of prescription and non-prescription drugs. Aloe Vera is hypoallergenic and has no known side effects even in large doses."
